Congress’ MV Rajeev Gowda faces BJP's Shobha Karandlaje in Lok Sabha elections in Bengaluru North constituency
Rajeev Gowda
Q: What are your priorities for
Bengaluru North, if voted to power?
A: Bengaluru North is the face of a new Bengaluru,
where growth and progress will thrive. However, significant development is
needed in the constituency, especially in the cultural sphere. While
institutions like Ravindra Kalakshetra and Ranga Shankara are present in the
central and southern parts of the City, the northern region lacks such
amenities, with the only notable one being Chowdiah Memorial Hall. Addressing
environmental concerns, improving water management and tackling traffic
congestion are my priorities.
Q: If we look back at the history of
17 elections conducted in Bengaluru North, 12 elections were won by Congress, 4
by BJP and 1 by JD(S). Don’t you feel Congress has lost its grip on the
constituency since 2004?
A: Despite some setbacks and the (Narendra) Modi
wave, it's important to recognise that Congress still holds a strong base in
Bengaluru North. BJP replaced Gowda thinking that he has not done anything and
Karandlaje has faced a ‘go back campaign’. Despite four consecutive terms by
BJP, little has been achieved, and it's time for a change. Caste will play its
role but Congress’ guarantees and BJP’s failures will turn the tide in our
favour this time.
Q: Your opponent Shobha Karandlaje
will be tough competition for you
A: Observing Shobha in Parliament, it's evident that
she is a determined fighter. However, her track record of igniting discord
within a particular community is concerning.
Q: What are the problems you noticed
in Bengaluru North and what changes are you trying to bring in?
A: I am committed to enhancing infrastructure,
expanding the Metro network, and improving the quality of sports facilities in
the area. Development should be comprehensive. I strongly believe in consulting
with the people to gather their input on what developments are needed and how
they should be implemented.
Q: What is your poll pitch to for the
voters?
A: During the election campaign, it's crucial to focus
on three key points. Firstly, we must highlight the achievements of the State
government. Secondly, we need to shed light on the failures of BJP. Finally,
voters should think about the importance of thinking locally and voicing their
needs and concerns.
Shobha Karandlaje
Q: What are your priorities for
Bengaluru North, if voted to power? What is your poll-pitch
A: I appeal to the voters to place their trust in
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP. In the next five years, my focus will be
on improving the lives of farmers, the poor, youth and women. My poll pitch
would be to uphold the integrity and fight against corruption in both the State
and the country.
Q: After 2004, Congress has not won
any election in the constituency. Do you think Congress can stage a comeback this year?
A: My opponent Rajeev Gowda will give me a tough
fight, I am not denying it. But, people will vote for BJP as we have a strong
grip on the constituency. The coming together of BJP and JD(S) has increased
our chances.
Q: Many among BJP have been sceptical
about giving a ticket to you over two-time MP Sadanand Gowda. Do you think this
has stirred disunity among the party?
A: No, there is no disunity in the party. Every worker
will join me in the campaign. We have a strong presence in Yeshwanthpur,
Dasarahalli and Mahalakshmi Layout.
Q: What are BJP’s campaign strategies
to reach out to more communities and ensure that everyone's voices and
opinions, especially youth, are heard?
A: I have launched an election campaign vehicle, which
will visit every ward to focus on development initiatives. As promised, our
work will be directed towards the welfare of the poor, women, and youth for the
betterment of the constituency. Additionally, many youngsters support Modi, and
they will vote for BJP.
Q: You stirred a controversy by
stating that Tamilians were responsible for the 1 March blast at Rameshwaram
Café. Your constituency has a sizable Tamil vote bank; do you think it will
affect your prospects?
A: I have asked for forgiveness from Tamilians, and
during the rally interaction, they expressed their belief in Modi. I don't
believe there will be any impact on my vote bank.
