Bruhat
Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) new initiative to feed stray animals in
areas where food is scarce has attracted mix reactions from residents, animal
activists.
Speaking to
Salar News, Anushka Yadav a member of PETA said, “"This is a positive
step, as feeding stray dogs can reduce their aggressive behavior and encourage
them to be more docile around humans. It could also foster greater tolerance
toward strays. However, the medical assistance component needs to be carefully
planned, with thorough surveys and execution.”
However,
many residents have expressed concerns about the practical implications of the
initiative. Speaking to Salar News, Vinay Sharma, an IT professional and a
resident of Koramangala said, “While I
support helping strays, it's important to ensure proper hygiene and management
of feeding spots to avoid any public health issues. Also, they have to make
sure that those particular spots do not affect the common man.”

Dhanraj V, an RT Nagar said “It is great that the BBMP is taking action, but
they must ensure that local communities are engaged in planning. We want to
help, but we need to be part of the solution.”
Ravikumar
V, a resident of Jayanagar, 4th Block, said, “Feeding strays is only a
short-term solution. The BBMP should also focus on spaying and neutering to
control the stray population. If their population is in control, they need not
go for so much extra work to control strays.”
As part of
the implementation, the BBMP will open registration for animal lovers and
volunteers who already feed stray dogs. The plan also includes strengthening
resources to better assist community animals, especially in cases that require
medical attention.
Thejeshwar
B, an Animal Welfare Warden and Board Member of Second Chance Sanctuary said, “Other
than the feeding, they have to plan the medical assistance project in a proper
way and do a proper survey and execute it accordingly.”
