Bengaluru, 19 April
Amid rising complaints about autorickshaw drivers in the City, Bengaluru police
have urged citizens—especially women and out-of-state visitors—to report
incidents of harassment, overcharging, or misbehaviour using official
helplines.
The appeal follows a string of troubling cases reported
this month. In one instance, a driver was arrested for harassing a woman
outside a shop by demanding her phone number and forcing a selfie. In another,
a man was allegedly threatened by a group of auto drivers near Rajarajeshwari
Nagar metro station for booking a Rapido ride. On 4 April, a driver was
arrested for allegedly raping a 19-year-old woman near KR Puram railway
station.
Police have also arrested several drivers involved in
violent assault cases across the city.
“These are serious offences,” said Police Commissioner B Dayananda. “We urge the public to report such behaviour. Strict action will be
taken.”
With over 2.76 lakh autos in Bengaluru, complaints about
overcharging and misconduct remain high. The Transport Department confirmed
over 3,000 cases of excess fare collection in 2024, with fines exceeding Rs 15.87
lakh.
Joint Commissioner (Traffic) MN Anucheth added, “Avoid
arguments on the street. Report details via helplines—we will act promptly.”
Incidents can be reported by calling 080-22868550, 080-22868444, or by emailing automationpubbcp@ksp.gov.in.
