DHARWAD, 15 JUNE
A protest erupted in front of
Suburban police station in Dharwad on Friday evening, following an attack on
Somasekhara Chennashetty, a pro-Hindu activist. Chennashetty, known for
rescuing cows and protecting reptiles and animals, was assaulted near the old
APMC in Dharwad city while attempting to rescue a cow.
The incident has sparked outrage
among activists, who allege that Chennashetty was targeted by a group involved
in illegal cattle slaughter. The attack, carried out by 50-60 individuals, left
Chennashetty severely injured, including a serious ear injury, necessitating
his hospitalisation.
BJP leaders and members, led by
Arvind Bellad, Deputy Leader of Opposition in Assembly, gathered at the
suburban police station demanding action against the assailants.
Bellad said, "Today another tragedy happened in peaceful Dharwad.
Some individuals were ready to slaughter cows, violating the regulations that
only allowed the slaughter of aged cattle. Somasekhara Chennashetty, who
protects animals and treats them, was attacked by a group led by a man running
a slaughterhouse.
The attack was brutal, and despite
it happening hours ago, no action has been taken. This is why activists have
besieged the police station."
Protesters withdrew from the
station after Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner Renuka Sukumar assured swift
action. "There was a commotion between two groups over the cattle issue,
and we have received a complaint about an attack. We have filed an FIR against
20 people. We have accessed CCTV footage and it will aid in our
investigation."
Chennashetty recounted the
incident, saying, "I was suddenly attacked by 30 youths. I called the PSI
of Suburban police station for protection. When police arrived, the
attackers fled. I appeal to police to protect me from further attacks." —Salar
