The government has acted in accordance of law when disposing of Bagair Hukum applications, said Revenue Minister Krishna Byregowda in the Legislative Assembly.

"Neither the government nor the officials have taken even a single step in violation of the law," he said in the Legislative Assembly on Monday. “If at any point a mistake by an officer has caused injustice to a farmer, let the MLAs bring it to my attention, and I will personally resolve the issue.

Replying to a question raised by MLA MT Krishnappa during the Question Hour, Minister Krishna Byregowda said only eligible applications must be placed before the Bagair Hukum Committee.

"Officials reject ineligible applications at the initial stage itself," he said.

Citing official figures, Byregowda said that 1,00,565 applications sought forest land, 13,488 applicants were non-farmers, 13,488 applications sought for Amrit Mahal Kaval lands and 44,517 applicants did not even possess land.

"All these are ineligible applications," the minister explained.

Bagair Hukum land refers to plots used by farmers who have traditionally been cultivating small pieces of land without proper ownership documents.

Byregowda added that the government could not revoke anyone’s Jungle Kharaabu or B-Kharaabu land if it had already been granted, but the State would not grant any more of such plots.

“However, in cases where, for instance, 119 acres of Jungle Kharaabu land has been granted to a single family, investigations are underway. A decision can then be taken regarding cancellation of such grants," he said.
