President Murmu receives Guard of Honour in Lisbon
This marks the first state visit by an Indian President to Portugal in 27 years

President Droupadi Murmu was given a guard of honour at the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon on 7 April. Portugal President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was also present on the occasion. On her arrival, India's Ambassador to Portugal Punit Roy Kundal welcomed Murmu at the airport. President Murmu left for a state visit to Portugal and the Slovak Republic on 6 April.
According to Rashtrapati Bhavan, this is the first state visit by the President of India to any country in over 25 years. Randhir Jaiswal, official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, said these visits will expand India's multifaceted engagement with two important EU partners. She is visiting Portugal at the invitation of Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The visit is taking place after a gap of 27 years. The last state visit was in 1998, when President K.R. Narayanan visited Portugal.
On 9 April, President Murmu will visit Slovakia at the invitation of Slovak President Peter Pellegrini. This will be the first visit of an Indian President to Slovakia in 29 years. Sharing details of the visit to Portugal, Secretary Lal said the visit is historic as it comes at a time when India and Portugal are completing 50 years of diplomatic relations and the visit will "take the friendship and partnership forward."
