Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra on 7 April wrote an open letter to BookMyShow, requesting the online ticketing platform to either not delist him or hand over the contact details of the audience he has gained over the years through his solo shows. The letter, which he shared on his X page, comes days after the Shiv Sena claimed that BookMyShow has removed Kamra from its platform for sales and artist listings amid the ongoing controversy over his 'seditious' remarks against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
On 5 April, the Mumbai-born comedian - who is now a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu - had asked BookMyShow if reports of him being removed from the platform were true. The comedian called upon his audience to boycott the platform. He said he is not in favour of harming any private business. However, BookMyShow reportedly takes a 10 per cent share of the revenue for listing the show.
He also highlighted the additional burden of advertising fees that all comedians are forced to pay to reach out to the audience. Kamra said one can argue that data security is a concern but the question of who protects what data from whom is a much broader conversation. Kamra's letter comes on the same day the comedian moved the Bombay High Court to quash the FIR filed against him by the city police for his alleged comments against Shinde, with the Madras High Court extending his interim anticipatory bail in the case till 17 April.
The comedian also claimed that he has been receiving death threats after the show and hence requested the police to question him via video conference. Kamra is at the centre of a major political controversy due to the comments he made during a stand up show titled 'Naya Bharat' in March 2025. It led Shiv Sainiks to vandalise the venue and file multiple FIRs against the comedian. However, his latest stand up show has garnered over 1.3 crore views on his YouTube channel.
