Vacant posts in government-run medical colleges will be filled only after the State government takes a decision on the internal reservation, Minister for Medical Education, Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Dr. Sharanaprakash Patil said in the Legislative Council.

Responding to a question during the Question Hour on Monday, Patil said that retired High Court Judge Justice HN Nagamohan Das submitted a report to the Cabinet on implementing internal reservation. This report has already been discussed in the Cabinet meeting last week, and a final decision is likely to be taken in the upcoming special Cabinet session.

Until the government finalises its stand on internal reservation, the chief minister has instructed that no department should proceed with recruitment for any posts, Patil said. “We cannot do anything until then,” he added.

There are a total of 21,860 sanctioned posts in medical colleges, out of which 9,413 have been filled, leaving 12,447 vacant, he said.

“No college or hospital is currently facing any problems. If any issue is brought to our notice, it will be resolved immediately,” the minister claimed. Earlier, medical colleges in Yadgir, Raichur, Kalaburagi and a few other places faced staff shortages, but these have now been addressed, he added.

Directors of medical colleges and the heads of the respective hospitals have been instructed to appoint staff on an outsourcing basis wherever needed, he said.
