BELAGAVI, 27 MAY

Road transport between Karnataka and Goa via Belagavi on state highway has been halted since Monday afternoon after heavy downpour in Khamapur taluk in Belagavi district and Sahyadri Ghat region triggered floods that drowned a bridge and also washed away a temporarily constructed mud road.

Instead of using the highway, people can travel to Goa via Khamapur taluk. However, only two-wheelers can pass through the construction site of a bridge across the Malaprabha river in Kosanolli village.

A temporary mud road was constructed across the river when it was dry, but it was washed away in the recent rains, blocking the Belagavi-Jamboti-Chorla road.

Khanapur receives the highest rainfall in the state after Aagbe disconnecting road links between many villages situated near the forest area.

National Highway Authority of India’s project manager in Belagavi, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, said that as water receded slightly on the under-construction bridge, only to two-wheelers are allowed to pass through.
