BENGALURU, 5 MAY
An under-trial prisoner who had escaped from the Trauma Care
Centre at Victoria Hospital has been arrested from Tumakuru bus stand, city
police said on Monday.
Chandrashekhar, the accused facing trial in a robbery case,
had allegedly attempted suicide on 2 May. He was admitted to the prison
hospital for treatment and later shifted to Victoria Hospital under police
watch.
Although he was secured to his hospital bed with leg cuffs,
Chandrashekhar managed to unlock the restraints and escape from the trauma
centre on Saturday. His escape triggered a frantic search operation by VV Puram
police and prison authorities.
A day after being on the run, Chandrashekhar was spotted at
Tumakuru bus stand around 8.20pm on Sunday and was detained by the
jurisdictional police. Acting on a tip-off, VV Puram police along with jail
officials took custody of him and brought him back to Bengaluru.
The preliminary investigation into Chandrashekhar’s escape highlighted lapses on the part of the personnel guarding him. An internal inquiry is underway. Chandrashekhar is currently being held at the VV Puram police station for further questioning.
