4 arrested for harassing interfaith duo in City

BENGALURU, 11 APRIL
In a
disturbing case of moral policing, a group of Muslim youths harassed and
intimidated a young Muslim girl and her non-Muslim male friend after spotting
them together on a scooter near a public park in Chandra Layout.
The youths, including a minor, not only hurled verbal abuses at the duo but
also filmed the incident, questioning the girl’s character and the boy’s
religion.
The incident
that took place on 8 April came to light after the video was circulated on
social media, showing the girl in a burqa being berated for her choice of company.
One of the youths also recorded the confrontation, in the hope of receiving viral
validation.
"Don’t
you feel ashamed sitting with a man from another faith?" one of the youths
is heard saying, while another questions her parents about being aware of her
whereabouts.
The boy was
similarly targeted for associating with someone outside his religion and
threatened with a cricket bat, as seen in the video.
The girl lodged
a complaint with the Chandra Layout police, following which the youths
identified as Mohammed Mohsin, Mohammed Mansoor, Mohammed Afridi and Waseem
Khan were arrested along with the juvenile.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru West, S Girish clarified that no
physical assault had taken place. One of the accused was known to the girl as
they lived in the same BCC Layout area.
