BENGALURU, 17 APRIL

State Department of Animal Husbandry has designated DJ Halli here as a 'disease-prone zone' and issued a notice to residents after a case of Glanders disease in a horse was reported from the area on Wednesday.

A horse caretaker from DJ Halli was tested positive for the virus. To prevent further transmission, strict restrictions have been imposed on the movement of horses, donkeys and mules, all potential carriers of the infection. Glanders disease, caused by the bacterium Burkholderia mallei, is highly contagious and poses a significant threat to animal and human health.

This ailment induces the formation of nodules and ulcers in the respiratory tract, known as "Farcy", which can be fatal if untreated. Glanders is zoonotic, meaning it can transfer to humans, particularly those in close contact with infected animals.

Medical experts stress the importance of regular check-ups to monitor and control the spread of Glanders. —

Symptoms

Fever, shivers, chest pain, sore throat, headache, cough, muscle soreness and tightness, sensitivity to light, excessive mucous, tearing in the eyes, diarrhoea, ulcers and fatigue.

People who are more likely to be exposed: Veterinarians or veterinary students, hoof-care workers, animal transportation workers, slaughterhouse workers, farmers and horse handlers.

Precautions

Protective equipment like disposable gloves, eyewear, masks, and gowns can reduce the risk of transmission.
