BIDAR, 20 JUNE

During a surprise inspection at Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS), Karnataka Upalokayukta Justice B Veerappa recovered Rs 1 lakh in cash, a cheque for the same amount, and several ATM cards from laboratory technician Sanjukumar Buyya’s bag on Saturday afternoon.

When questioned, Sanjukumar reportedly fumbled and failed to give a satisfactory explanation, prompting Justice Veerappa to reprimand BRIMS Superintendent Dr Shivayogi Bali.

He stated, “The discovery of such a large amount of money in a public institution like a hospital raises serious suspicions,” and directed officials to investigate, seize the cash and cheque, and register a suo motu case.

The Upalokayukta also expressed displeasure at the torn and damaged beds in patient wards, criticising the poor condition of facilities.

During inspections across Bidar, Justice Veerappa was particularly upset by the hospital’s inadequate beds and water supply, questioning, “What are you doing with crores of rupees? How can a six-storey building function without adequate beds and water? There is not even seating for patients’ attendants.”

He criticised BRIMS Director Shantala Kaujalagi and District Surgeon MS Bali, emphasising the need for regular inspections. At Bidar Medical College Hospital, the technician’s possession of Rs 1 lakh and a cheque was questioned; officials were instructed to seize the money and investigate.

The team also visited Bidar’s Central Bus Stand, criticising unhygienic conditions and mismanagement, and directed authorities to improve cleanliness and hygiene standards for public health.
