Karnataka New Home
Minister Priyank Kharge on Friday said an action plan would be formulated with
a focus on road safety, stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, and
improving the efficiency of the traffic police.
He visited
the Bengaluru Traffic Management Centre and held discussions with senior
officials on the City's traffic management system. The meeting was attended by
Director General and Inspector General of Police MA Saleem, Bengaluru City
Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh, and others.
Officers
told Priyank that while Bengaluru's annual population growth rate stands at 3.7
per cent, the vehicle growth rate is around 10 per cent, a statement from his
office said.
Priyank said Bengaluru's traffic was being managed effectively through the use of
modern technology and that efforts would be made to further improve operational
efficiency in the coming days.
“Bengaluru
requires an agile Urban Mobility Plan to address congestion, last-mile gaps,
public transport integration, delivery logistics, corporate commute pressure
and data-driven mobility planning,” Priyank stated on X after the meeting.
“We will
set up a committee that will bring together Traffic Police, Greater Bengaluru
Authority, BMTC, BMRCL, BDA, DULT, Suburban Railway/K-RIDE, mobility platforms
such as Namma Yatri, MoveInSync, Uber and Rapido, delivery platforms such as
Swiggy, and technology clusters such as ORR and Manyata,” Priyank added. “The
proposed committee will act as a mission-mode coordination and implementation
mechanism with clear deliverables, working groups and dashboard-based
accountability. “
The Bengaluru Traffic Police, functioning across four divisions and operating 53 police stations, manages traffic on a road network spanning approximately 14,000 kilometres. Officials said the City has around 1.25 crore registered vehicles.
