Chikkamagaluru, 23 Feb

Residents of Koppa, NR Pura, and Sringeri taluks in Chikkamagaluru observed a peaceful bandh on Monday, protesting against the alleged inaction of the Karnataka Forest Department and Police in preventing ongoing wild elephant attacks.

The unrest intensified after two coffee estate workers were killed within a week. The residents accused authorities of failing to ensure safety, with protests continuing outside the Forest Department office in Balehonnur.

Police used a lathi charge and detained around 20 leaders as protests remained peaceful. Shops, markets, educational institutions, and private transport voluntarily supported the bandh from 8am to 5pm, with heavy police deployment to maintain order.

The protests erupted following the death of Boramma, from Kudligi in Vijayanagara district, who was killed while working at a plantation near Hunasehalli in the Koppa forest range. Villagers protesting the incident faced police action, fuelling tensions further.

Two FIRs were registered against over 29 individuals, with more than ten police officers injured in clashes. The second attack involved Yallappa from Hanagal taluk. The incidents highlight escalating human-wildlife conflict in the region.

Meanwhile, State Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre directed officials to share real-time information about wild animal movements with local leaders, plantation associations, and labour unions through WhatsApp groups to prevent such tragedies.

During an emergency video conference, Khandre emphasised the importance of quick communication and round-the-clock vigilance. He stressed that human safety must be prioritised, urging strict enforcement of prohibitory orders under section 144 during wildlife capture operations and the use of thermal drones.

Despite warnings, Boramma entered a plantation and was attacked.
