Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) National Convener Kurubur
Shanthakumar said that the non-political farmer’s organisation will undertake a
yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir from 7 February. The goal of the movement is
to urge the Union government to implement the Minimum Support Price Guarantee
Act for agriculture produce.
Addressing media persons in Mysuru on Friday, he said a huge
convention for farmers will be held on 19 March at Ram Leela grounds at New
Delhi. A memorandum including farmers’ signatures collected during the
nationwide rally will then be submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He noted that despite the Supreme Court constituted High
Powered panel of experts committee led by Justice Nawab Singh (retired)
recommending a legal guarantee of MSP, the Centre had not responded.
Shanthakumar claimed that farmers are suffering a loss
of at least Rs 15 lakh crore loss annually due to the absence of the MSP
act. At least 70,000 farmers died by suicide across the country last year.
During the yatra, farmers will also be sensitised about
alleged anti-farmer policies of the State and Union government, he said.
Earlier, farmers had held a series of protests at Shambhu
border in Punjab and several other parts of the nation.
Farmer leaders Attahalli Devaraj, Baradanapura Nagaraj,
others were present.
