Authorities in State’s Kolar district have identified more than 98,000 dogs, including 18,734 pet dogs, in a survey conducted by civic bodies with NGOs, Deputy Commissioner Ravi MR said.
The survey found about 75,000 dogs in rural areas and nearly 23,000 in urban pockets. Dog density was highest around hospitals, educational institutions, bus stands, temples and similar public spaces, prompting authorities to mark strategic locations for intervention.
In line with Supreme Court guidelines, civic authorities have begun creating shelters for stray dogs. In urban areas, shelters have been set up near solid waste management units located outside city limits, while rural local bodies will identify suitable sites.
Ravi said dogs will first undergo animal birth control procedures, be monitored for three days, and then shifted to shelters. Care will follow Animal Welfare Board of India SOPs, including two meals daily, periodic vaccination and regular cleaning.
The state government has allocated funds for shelters, with costs estimated at Rs 3.35 lakh per 100 dogs. Nodal officers will be appointed at institutions to prevent dogs returning, while adoption proposals have been invited.
