At least 30 girl students of the Post-Matric Backward Classes Welfare Department Girls’ Hostel in Yadgir district fell ill on Wednesday night, allegedly due to consuming contaminated food and water. The affected students were admitted to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in the town.
Doctors said that four students from the hostel in Gurmitkal town, in critical condition, were shifted to the district hospital in Yadgir city.
“Chicken was served for dinner in the hostel on Wednesday night. For those who don't eat chicken, soybean greens curry and tomato curry were prepared. More than 80 students had dinner. About half an hour after eating, some began vomiting,” the students said.
“It wasn’t just those who ate meat; even those who ate only vegetables became sick,” a few students anxiously said.
“The Backward Classes Welfare Department officials must immediately identify the cause of the problem,” All India Bahujan Samaj Party's State Vice-President, KB Vasu, told Salar News.
A team from the district administration—including Deputy Commissioner Harshal Boyar, Zilla Panchayat CEO Lavish Oradia, District Superintendent of Police Prithvik Shankar, the Tahsildar, and department officials—visited the hospital at midnight to review the treatment arrangements.
Gurmitkal Police have collected food samples and sent them for testing. The Food Safety Department has begun inspecting the hostel’s kitchen, storage, and hygiene conditions.
