  • Nagavva, who was married for nine years, reportedly came into contact with the accused about a year after her marriage

BELAGAVI, 6 DEC

A 28-year-old married woman from Gonaganur village in Ramdurg taluk, Belagavi district, committed suicide after what her family said was harassment and threats from a man in the same village.

The deceased has been identified as Nagavva Demappa Vantamoori. Her family filed a police complaint accusing Maktumsab Patel of pressuring her to convert to Islam and to continue a relationship she had ended. They allege that repeated threats and visits to her home caused severe distress, leading to her death.

Nagavva, who was married for nine years, reportedly came into contact with the accused about a year after her marriage. According to the family, the acquaintance later turned into an illicit relationship. After the relationship came to light, her family intervened, and she severed contact with him.

The complaint states that Patel continued to threaten her after this, insisting she convert to Islam and resume the relationship. Her family claims this directly contributed to her suicide.

The body has been shifted to BIMS Hospital in Belagavi for post-mortem. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway, said the Belagavi Superintendent of Police, Bhimashankar Guled, who confirmed the incident.
