Haveri, 28 Nov

A group of six men forcibly entered a house and brutally attacked a family over a loan repayment dispute in Hanagal taluk of Haveri district. They allegedly attempted to murder the victim, Jainulasab Babusab Tumbaragi, 62, under the pretext of collecting interest on a loan, attempting to kill him.

The Hanagal police have so far arrested three people based on a complaint by Jainulasab.

The group allegedly assaulted Jainulasab and pushed around and assaulted family members and issued death threats. Accused Yogesh Sunagar reportedly attempted to hit Jainulasab with a wooden club. When his relative Gausamoddin Rajkhan intervened, the blow struck his left arm, leaving him seriously injured. He is now undergoing treatment.

"Yogesh attacked my son, Gousamodin Bakshusa, 25, who sustained injuries to his hand. We rushed to the hospital and he is currently receiving treatment,” Jainulasab told Salar News.

“We have to give the attackers an outstanding loan amount of Rs 21,000. We have already paid a significant portion of the loan with interest."

Police said the complainant’s son had been paying interest regularly, yet the accused continued to demand more. The group allegedly created a ruckus during dinner time and terrorised the family. Neighbours intervened and prevented further violence.

"(The accused) were involved in moneylending in the village,” Sub-inspector Sampath told Salar News. “They used to lend money to vegetable vendors, street-side traders, and others for daily needs at high interest rates. If interest was not paid, they harassed the borrowers."

The arrested are Yogesh Sunagar, 27; Manoj Sunagar, 28; and Devaraj Taravanda, 26, all residents of Bommanahalli. They have been remanded in judicial custody, and a search is on for the remaining accused.
