A male tiger suspected to be connected to three deaths in the Hediyala, Moleyur and Nugu forest belts was captured by the Karnataka Forest Department on Saturday night in Saragur taluk, following an extensive search across the Bandipur–Nagarahole landscape.

The tiger, around 12–13 years old, was found with multiple wounds and severely worn teeth. Officials said its weakened condition likely reduced its ability to hunt wild prey, bringing it closer to human settlements and triggering livestock depredation and escalating fear in several forest-fringe villages over the past month.

Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre confirmed the capture and ordered a DNA analysis to verify whether the tiger is indeed linked to the three deaths. “The victims’ post-mortem reports and the tiger’s DNA profile must be cross-verified before conclusions are drawn,” he said.

Combing operations had intensified in recent days, with safari services in Bandipur and Nagarahole suspended and personnel redirected to assist. Teams from multiple ranges, supported by trained capture units, participated in the effort. A night-patrol squad equipped with a Rapid Response Team vehicle monitored vulnerable zones and issued safety alerts, while leaflets outlining precautions were circulated among villagers.

Though the capture has provided some relief, authorities have urged residents in forest-edge areas to remain cautious. The minister has directed officials to continue combing operations to prevent any further conflict.
