Kolar, 4 Sept
The death of an eight-year-old girl, Tanvi,
following the alleged administration of a high dose of an injection by an unqualified
person, has prompted Kolar district health authorities to crack down on clinics
run illegally by non-qualified practitioners.
District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. Srinivas
said preliminary reports revealed that the clinic where the girl was first
taken was operating on a “proprietary” basis and that the Ayurvedic doctor
officially in charge was not present at the time.
Only a thorough investigation can reveal
who administered the girl with the high dosage injection which parents alleged
killed the girl, he said.
Dr. Srinivas added that the department had
already begun closing several such unlicensed clinics, particularly in rural
and border areas, and legal proceedings have been initiated against many
quacks.
He explained that some clinics function
under agreements where proprietors—often unqualified individuals—hire
registered doctors to lend legitimacy but end up administering medicines
themselves. Around a dozen such clinics are believed to exist in the district.
The DHO said officials will inspect all these centres to ensure compliance and initiate action against violators.
