SHIVAMOGGA, 3 SEPT

Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has instructed the Chief Conservator of Forests to investigate and submit a report on the complaints against the Agumbe Rainforest Research Centre in Thirthahalli in Shivamogga district, including encroachment of forest land and illegal construction of buildings in forest areas.

A case recently came to light where King Cobras were allegedly kept in captivity and offered to wildlife photographers for illegal photo and video shoots in the name of conservation.

Social activist Dinesh Kallahalli, who lodged a complaint with the principal Chief Conservator of forests, said videos and photographs of King Cobras can generate revenue worth lakhs of rupees.

Kallahalli pointed out that permission for research is usually granted only for a specific duration, but here, year-round photography is being conducted in the name of research. He further alleged that King Cobras are being exploited under the guise of conservation and protection.

Recently, the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS) had also invited wildlife filmmaker Pradeep Hegde and allowed him to capture the mating, nesting, egg-laying, and hatching of King Cobras.

Though locals informed the forest department, the reptiles were allegedly hidden by the time the officials arrived.

In response, Khandre said that the team has been asked to submit a comprehensive report within 10 days, with recommendations for action against negligent officials and those found guilty of violations.

Social activist Dinesh Kallahalli also filed a complaint, alleging that the AARS illegally purchased land in Tallur village, in Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary in Shivamogga district.
