During a surprise inspection, the State Commission for Protection of
Child Rights found several hostels and hospitals in Yadgir district to have
non-functional drinking water units, unhygienic toilets and serving food
improperly.
Shashidhar Kosambe, a member of the Commission, instructed the concerned
departmental officials to take immediate action to take immediate action.
In the Indira Gandhi Nursing Girls' Post-Matric Hostel in Yadgir city,
students said that the drinking water unit was non-functional, toilets were
unhygienic, and meals were not being served properly. Upon inspection, Kosambe
noted that there was a shortage of food supplies and hot water was not being
adequately surprised. He directed the Backward Classes Welfare Department
officer to issue a notice to the hostel warden.
In the district sports hostel under the Youth Empowerment and Sports
Department, students said they were not given bed sheets, mosquito nets or even
tooth paste. They said leftover food was being served again at dinner. Notably,
the Child Helpline number helpline number sign board gave the number as 1099
instead of the correct 1098.
During the visit to Devapur village in Surpur Taluk, Kosambe noticed a
child working in a garage. He immediately rescued the child and directed that
the child be presented before the Child Welfare Committee and admitted to a
children’s home.
Later, he said that 129 children in the Taluk were suffering from severe malnutrition.
