BELAGAVI, 20 JUNE

Rains in Maharashtra’s south and western ghat regions have resulted in Krishna river’s water level gradually rising, thereby increasing the chance of floods in Karnataka’s Belagavi, Bagalkot, Raichur and Yadagiri districts.

Hipparagi barrage in Jamakhandi of Bagalkot district received 79,800 cusecs of inflow on 19 June and to maintain water level in the barrage 79,050 cusecs water was released in the Narayanpur reservoir in Yadagiri district from the Krishna. The Narayanpur reservoir’s inflow was 75,000 cusecs on 19 June. As the dam had less water, no out flow was made.

The district administrations of Yadagiri and Raichur cautioned the public against going near the river and asked those residing on its banks to shift to safer places in case of floods. The administrations also identified places to shelter the affected.

The IndiaMetrological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rains in Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi till 26 June.

To maintain water level in Karnataka's largest reservoir at Alamatti Dam, 70,440 cusecs water was released to the Narayanpur reservoir from the Krishna on Friday. The Krishna and Doodhaganga rivers received 60,000 cusecs and 15,000 cusecs of water from Maharashtra’s Radhanagari reservoir respectively.
