Mysuru, 1 May

Heavy rainfall that lashed Mysuru on Wednesday night and early Thursday morning left several parts of the city inundated and caused widespread disruption. Numerous low-lying areas were waterlogged, and power outages were reported as strong winds uprooted trees and damaged electric poles.

Over 250 incidents of tree branch falls were reported across the city.

A tree and an electric pole fell onto a house compound near Priyadarshini Hospital in Brindavan Layout, cutting off power supply. Residents expressed anger at city corporation officials for not acting despite repeated complaints about the dangerous tree.

Branches also fell along the Kukkarahalli Lake bund, a popular local spot.

The overnight downpour overwhelmed stormwater drains, causing them to overflow and flood roads, catching residents off guard.

Mysuru City Corporation Superintending Engineer Sindhu stated that from the past three days of rain, the corporation had received reports of 53 uprooted trees and 543 fallen branches across all nine city zones. All have been cleared, and pruning operations are underway.

In rural parts of the district, strong winds and rain from 8pm on Wednesday caused coconut trees to fall and damaged crops like banana and maize in T Narasipura, HD Kote, Hunsur, Periyapatna, Saragur and KR Nagar taluks.

District Horticulture Officer Dr Manjunatha Angadi said assistant directors have been directed to submit reports on crop damage, including banana and coconut plantations, by Saturday.
