MANGALURU, 28 MARCH
Authorities have
intercepted a mini goods vehicle near a mosque in Mangaluru taluk, discovering
nearly 20 cattle allegedly transported in a 'cruel manner' during a major
operation against illegal cattle transport. The driver and two accomplices fled
the scene, abandoning the vehicle.
Police noticed
suspicious signs, including removed number plates, leading them to investigate
further. Upon inspection, they found approximately 15-20 cattle cruelly tied
within the vehicle, indicating they were being transported for slaughter.
Tragically, two animals were discovered dead due to injuries sustained during
transport, while the remaining cattle received necessary medical attention from
veterinary officials.
Preliminary
investigations revealed the vehicle's original registration number, linking two
suspects—Tauseef Peradi and Harine Peradi—to the incident. A third individual
remains unidentified, according to a senior police officer. A case has been
registered at Bajpe police station under relevant laws concerning animal
cruelty and illegal transport.
Sharan Pumpwell, the regional joint secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Mangaluru, highlighted a concerning rise in illegal cattle transportation across Dakshina Kannada district in recent weeks. He described the brutal method employed by smugglers, stating, "They had tied one hind leg of each animal to the roof of the pick-up truck." He called on authorities to take immediate action, warning that they would be held accountable for any adverse events resulting from inaction. Further investigations are underway to apprehend the absconding suspects and uncover the full extent of the operation.
