Baby girl rescued after parents sell her for Rs 14,000
The child’s parents, Sowmya and Anilkumar from Neelakantanagar in Nanjangud town, had reportedly sold her to a childless couple from a village in Chamarajanagar district.

A
two-year-old girl, allegedly sold by her biological parents for Rs 14,000, was
rescued on Thursday by a team of officials from the Department of Women and Child
Welfare, the police, and the District Child Protection Committee.
The
child’s parents, Sowmya and Anilkumar from Neelakantanagar in Nanjangud town,
had reportedly sold her to a childless couple from a village in Chamarajanagar
district.
The
incident came to light on 13 March when an Anganwadi worker from
Neelakantanagar learned about the sale from the child’s grandmother, Nagamma.
The worker informed the Nanjangud Child Development Programme Officer (CDPO),
who then alerted the District Child Protection Committee.
On 20 March,
with the assistance of the Nanjangud police, officials rescued the girl from
Chamarajanagar. She was handed over to the District Child Welfare Committee for
care and rehabilitation.
A case
has been registered against the child’s parents, Sowmya and Anilkumar, as well
as a broker named Lakshamma.
Authorities also rescued the couple’s two other daughters, and all three children have been placed at Chayadevi Adoption Centre in Mysuru.
