Kodagu, 21 MARCH

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced the formation of a dedicated team to combat encroachment along the flow of the Cauvery River and to curb pollution affecting its waters. Speaking to reporters in Bhagamandala, he stated, "We are forming a team to stop encroachment and pollution of the Cauvery. We will do whatever it takes to protect our land, water, history, and traditions."

To mark World Water Day on 22 March, the Karnataka government will launch a week-long campaign focusing on water conservation. Shivakumar will also lead a "Cauvery Aarti," aimed at raising awareness regarding the importance of water and its preservation. He expressed gratitude and offered prayers to Goddess Cauvery for good rainfall and a bountiful harvest this year.

Emphasising local involvement, he confirmed that officials have been instructed to ensure participation from artists in Kodagu for the Cauvery Aarti. "We have already earmarked funds for the Cauvery Aarti. The frequency of the event will be decided in the coming days," he noted.

The water conservation initiative will include an oath against water misuse, which can be taken both during the Aarti at Sankey Tank and online. Shivakumar reiterated a promise made last year during an offering ceremony at the KRS dam to commence the Aarti, assuring the public of its fulfilment.

He thanked the residents of Kodagu for electing two Congress MLAs from the region and highlighted the importance of the Cauvery River as a lifeline for Bengaluru, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Additionally, he confirmed his attendance at an upcoming anti-delimitation meeting led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on 22 March.
