BENGALURU, 9 MARCH

Bengaluru and parts of South interior Karnataka are likely to receive pre-monsoon showers on 11 and 12 March, bringing some relief from the unusual heat experienced in recent weeks, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The rainfall is attributed to a weather system developing over Tamil Nadu, which could also trigger scattered rain in coastal Karnataka, particularly in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

IMD’s senior scientist CS Patil on Sunday said Bengaluru and other southern districts are expected to receive 30–40 per cent more pre-monsoon rain between March and May. The anticipated rainfall is expected to bring down daytime temperatures in the city, although densely populated areas may continue to experience the urban heat island effect. Coastal Karnataka and the Malnad region may witness an increase of 50–60 per cent rainfall, bringing temporary relief from summer heat.

However, the north interior Karnataka is expected to face severe heat wave conditions, with daytime temperatures likely to range between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius. The IMD has advised people living in these areas to be hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak hours and adopt protective measures to prevent heat-related illnesses.

The state health department has also urged people in north-eastern districts to remain cautious as high temperatures are expected to persist throughout March.
