MYSURU, 5 MARCH

Members of Mysuru City Corporation Elections Horata Samithi, including Aam Aadmi Party, Socialist Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and a few pro-Kannada organisations on Wednesday held a protest outside the Mysuru City Corporation, condemning the delay in holding MCC and other local body polls in the district.

The protesters raised slogans against the state government for postponing the elections under the pretext of delay in announcement of reservation.

Though the state election commission is ready to hold the elections, the government is not ready to do so as it did not want local administrations to run their affairs, they said.

The ruling Congress, which speaks of strengthening the local bodies with a three-tier system of decentralisation of power, is delaying elections to such democratic institutions, the protesters said.

The protesters also criticised the opposition parties such as BJP and JDS for being silent on the issue. Their silence on this issue indicates their tacit support and adjustment politics with the state government, they accused.

They also urged the state government to stop its interference in local administrations and requested Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to bring a legislature to give complete powers to the election commission to hold elections in time to all elected bodies.
