Bengaluru,

State
government on Wednesday decided to shift the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health
Sciences (RGUHS) from Ramanagara to Kanakapura. This long-pending proposal,
first introduced in 2008, will be resubmitted to the National Medical
Commission (NMC) for approval.
Alongside
this, the government is focusing on enhancing the infrastructure of the
Kanakapura Medical College. However, the government is waiting for NMC approval
to decide on the shifting date.
Addressing
the reporters here, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, said that Rs 600 crore
has been allocated for the land acquisition for this project.
The
decision to shift the medical university to Ramanagara was taken by JD(S)-BJP
alliance government in 2006, which envisioned a 'health city' alongside the
RGUHS campus.
The
original plan included a super-speciality hospital, multiple medical and
nursing colleges, hostels, and staff quarters to serve the people of
Ramanagara, Mysuru, Mandya, and other surrounding districts.
In 2022,
BJP government gave administrative approval for the project, and construction
commenced in March 2023. However, amidst these developments, Chief Minister
Siddaramaiah's recent budget announcement introduced a new medical college for
Kanakapura, which led to a decision to shift the proposed medical college from
the RGUHS campus to Kanakapura instead. -Salar News
