Raichur, 23 Feb

A large quantity of government-supplied medicines was found dumped in a garbage heap near the cremation ground in Raichur on the road leading to Jalal Nagar on Sunday.

There were no expired medicines, but cough syrups, cold tonics, syringes, and other medicines that were still within their validity period were found in the heap. Locals saw heaps of syringes and cough syrup meant for small children and brought the matter to the attention of the Health Department.

Locals expressed outrage, stating that in government hospitals such as RIMS Hospitaland Namma Clinic, doctors often ask outpatients to purchase drugs from outside.

Learning about the incident, District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr Surendra Babu and drug control officials visited the spot.

The officials said that the dumped cough syrups were labelled “Physician Sample,” while some syringes were marked as “Government Supply.” Some medicines bore the name “Biological Limited.”

An investigation will be held to find how and from where these medicines reached the spot. Action will be taken against the concerned staff, the officials said.

Later, Health Department officials collected the medicines in bags and removed them.
