Bengaluru, Dec 16:

Members of the Karnataka Drivers’ Union on Tuesday staged a protest against Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) over changes in pick-up locations and an increase in parking fees at Kempegowda International Airport.

The protest was held near the Sadahalli Gate toll plaza under the leadership of union founder and state president G Narayanaswamy. Brief tension was reported when police resorted to a mild lathi charge after protesters attempted to stop taxis from entering the airport premises.

Union members alleged that the new pick-up system has inconvenienced both drivers and passengers, leading to congestion and operational difficulties. They also objected to the increased parking charges, saying the revised fee structure places an additional financial burden on drivers who depend on airport trips for their livelihood.

In a statement, BIAL said changes were introduced in view of rising passenger and vehicle volumes at the airport. It said private vehicles have been provided dedicated pick-up lanes with a free time window, while commercial vehicles are required to operate from designated parking areas and supervised pick-up zones.

According to BIAL officials, under the new system at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, private vehicles are allowed eight minutes of free use at the arrival pick-up zone. Vehicles overstaying will be charged Rs 150 for 8–13 minutes and Rs 300 for 13–18 minutes, while those exceeding 18 minutes will be towed and penalised.
