A new study, released to mark Women’s Health Month this May, highlights the growing impact of robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) in transforming gynaecological care across India. Conducted across five major tertiary hospitals—Apollo Health City (Hyderabad), PGIMER (Chandigarh), Manipal Hospital and Narayana Health (Bengaluru), and Tata Memorial Hospital (Mumbai)—the study analyses a decade of procedures using da Vinci robotic systems.

Lead author Dr Rooma Sinha, Honorary Professor and Chief Gynaecologist at Apollo Health City, noted that over 70 per cent of robotic procedures were performed in the last five years, reflecting a strong upward trend. She emphasised that RAS offers superior precision and recovery benefits, especially in managing benign conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, and adenomyosis.

“Robotic surgery enables shorter hospital stays and less blood loss—crucial for women balancing home and work,” added Dr Vanita Jain, Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at PGIMER, Chandigarh.

The study underscores the precision required for fertility-preserving procedures like myomectomy, where robotic systems offer better visualisation and control. Dr Subhas C Saha, another key contributor from PGIMER, highlighted ongoing efforts to reduce costs by using fewer robotic arms and multifunctional tools.

While insurance coverage for RAS is gradually expanding, the study urges broader support to make this technology more accessible. “Wider reimbursement can ensure more women benefit from advanced surgical care,” Dr Saha concluded.

Women’s Health Month aims to raise awareness and encourage women to prioritise their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
