Bengaluru 23 May
Following days of relentless rain and
severe waterlogging in Sai Layout, located in Horamavu ward of the Mahadevapura
Zone, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched a swift public
health response to prevent the outbreak of infectious diseases.
Since the downpour began on 18 May, civic life in the area has been disrupted.
Acting on ground reports, Mahadevapura
Zonal Commissioner KN Ramesh led a health initiative through the BBMP’s medical
wing to mitigate the risks. Zonal Health Officer Dr Lokesh and Medical Health
Officer Dr Vishweshwarayya, alog with a dedicated team, set up a health camp in
the locality.
Doctors and paramedics have been deployed to offer free check-ups, with
essential medicines and an ambulance on standby. ASHA workers and nursing
college students are conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns on dengue,
waterborne illnesses, and safe hygiene practices.
Speaking to Salar News, Vinutha R, a
homemaker in Sai Layout 3rd Cross, said, "Yes, the BBMP has responded
quickly this time in providing medication. But we really hope they don’t stop
here. We need better drainage, not just emergency camps during every
downpour."
So far, 115 residents have received
treatment for ailments including hypertension, diabetes, and skin infections,
according to the BBMP.
Meanwhile, fogging and anti-mosquito
spraying have begun to curb mosquito breeding in the area.
The BBMP said that it will
restart its drive to clear stormwater drain (rajakaluve) encroachments next
week, following Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s directive.
BBMP Chief Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao has asked zonal commissioners to submit encroachment lists within three days. Of 1,963 encroachments identified, 149 are under court stay.
