BENGALURU, 4 APRIL
The Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents
Association (FKSLOAA) has issued a warning of a statewide strike in response to
the recent hike in diesel prices.
A crucial meeting has been scheduled for Saturday to
finalise their decision.
"The price of diesel has increased twice since the
Congress government assumed office. We are convening on Saturday to address
this issue and are planning a strike next week," stated GR Shanmugappa,
president of FKSLOAA.
On 1 April, the state government raised the sales tax on
diesel by 2.73 per cent, resulting in a Rs 2 increase per litre. Diesel prices
in Bengaluru have now reached Rs 91.02 per litre. The government has justified
the increase, highlighting the necessity to bolster revenue for developmental
projects.
However, the hike has attracted intense backlash from
transporters, who argue that escalating fuel costs will severely impact their
operations. Industry experts caution that increased transportation costs could
lead to a rise in prices for essential goods, further straining consumers
already grappling with inflation.
A lorry strike could impede the movement of goods across Karnataka, potentially causing shortages and delays in supply chains.
