BENGALURU, 22 MARCH

A protest broke out on Saturday against the felling of 23 mature trees on Ali Asker Road, opposite the Embassy, to facilitate the construction of a new government office. The demonstration, led by members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), alongside concerned citizens and environmental activists, highlighted widespread outrage over the loss of these trees, deemed vital to the city’s ecosystem.

Prakash Nedungadi, treasurer of AAP Karnataka, expressed his discontent, labelling the tree removal a significant blow to Bengaluru's greenery. "Cutting down 23 beautiful, old trees in the city centre for a government office reflects the Congress Government's misguided efforts in promoting 'Brand Bengaluru'," he stated. He further accused Food Minister HK Muniyappa of approving the tree felling despite strong opposition from residents and environmentalists.

Local residents echoed their dismay, questioning why the building's design could not have accommodated the trees. "If the government behaves in this manner, what can we expect from private developers?" remarked one citizen. While officials from the Forest Department confirmed that all necessary permits were secured via an expert committee, protesters remain sceptical. “New trees won’t mature in our lifetime,” lamented a senior citizen, as AAP leaders called for accountability from Minister Muniyappa regarding the controversial decision.
