Bengaluru, 9 March
Greenpeace
India activists are demanding a reversal of the recent Bengaluru metro fare
hike, citing its disproportionate impact on low- and middle-income groups. A
survey conducted by the organisation found that 72 per cent of respondents said their transport costs now
exceed or equal their one-time meal expense.
The
activists argue that the fare hike will lead to a decrease in metro ridership,
which has already dropped by 13% overall and 20% in February alone. They also
point out that the hike will disproportionately affect women, who rely more
heavily on public transport.
Instead
of increasing fares, Greenpeace India suggests that the government should
prioritise affordable and sustainable public transport. They propose measures
such as congestion charges and stricter parking policies to generate revenue
while curbing excessive car use.
The activists have written to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) demanding a rollback of the fare hike and calling for a dedicated metro fund with annual contributions from both state and national governments. They urge the authorities to reconsider the fare hike and work towards providing affordable public transport for all.
