The ongoing investigation into a Rs 12 crore gold smuggling case linked to actress Ranya Rao has intensified, with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) expanding its probe to include potential connections to influential figures within the Kannada film industry and certain politicians.

Officials have revealed that forensic analysis of Ranya's mobile phone has uncovered frequent communications with film producers, financiers, and political figures, suggesting a broader network associated with the smuggling operation. Investigators are now working to determine whether these individuals were involved in funding or facilitating the illicit gold trade.

Sources indicate that Ranya’s extravagant lifestyle and unexplained wealth, despite her limited acting career, have raised suspicions about her role as a carrier in a larger smuggling network. The DRI is also scrutinising the finances of her husband, businessman Jatin Hukkeri, to trace the origins of the funds allegedly used to procure the smuggled gold.

The investigation has deepened with findings indicating possible political connections, leading officials to believe that prominent individuals may have utilised Ranya as a conduit for smuggling gold from Dubai and other locations. The DRI has already seized assets valued at Rs 17 crore linked to the case and is poised to summon key film and political figures frequently in touch with Ranya Rao. Further arrests are anticipated as the inquiry unfolds

Meanwhile, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched an investigation into gold smuggling, registering a case against individuals importing gold into India via various airports.
Two CBI teams have been dispatched to Mumbai and Bengaluru airports to gather relevant information.
