With temperatures rising significantly across Karnataka, residents are increasingly turning to refreshing beverages for relief, resulting in a surge in demand for tender coconut water. However, limited supply has led to sharp price increases, with tender coconuts now costing Rs 60 each in Bengaluru, causing concern among both consumers and vendors.

As the summer season approaches, locals are already feeling the effects of the early heat, preparing for potentially harsher weather in the coming months. Meteorological Department officials have warned that temperatures are expected to remain above average until the end of May, elevating worries about the ongoing heatwave.

Construction worker Venkatesh S expressed the struggle many face: "These days, we hardly eat proper meals—just drink water and other cool drinks to stay hydrated. By 8 am, the sun becomes unbearable, and stepping outside feels impossible."

Just days ago, tender coconuts were priced around Rs 25 to Rs 30, but prices have now nearly doubled, leaving customers astounded. Sunitha, a private bank employee from Vijayanagara, noted, "Today, the same coconut costs Rs 60, and in some places, even more."

Vendors attribute the price hikes to erratic supplies from districts like Mandya and Tumakuru, compounded by last year's severe summer that weakened many coconut trees. Ramesh Gowda, a trader from Tumakuru, remarked, "Demand has far exceeded supply, which is why prices have shot up."

While urban consumers become more health-conscious and opt for natural beverages, the increased costs primarily affect consumers. Farmers receive only a small portion of the profits due to escalating transportation and middleman fees, turning tender coconut water into a luxury for many. The Meteorological Department urges residents to stay hydrated and take health precautions as temperatures remain high.
