BENGALURU, 27 FEB

Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, managed by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) in collaboration with Menzies Aviation, has inaugurated India's largest Greenfield Domestic Cargo Terminal (DCT) based on designed capacity.

Spanning 245,000 square feet, this advanced facility is a significant enhancement to BLR Airport’s cargo handling capabilities and aims to address the burgeoning demands of the domestic market. The DCT is set to play a pivotal role in connecting industries, fortifying supply chains, and promoting a more sustainable future for domestic cargo operations, establishing BLR Airport as a leader in this sector.

Located over seven acres, the DCT boasts a peak handling capacity of approximately 360,000 metric tons, with future expansion potential to 400,000 metric tons. It features 42 truck docks, over 400 specialised cargo bins, integrated conveyors with X-ray machines, and around 30 Unit Load Device (ULD) build-up and breakdown stations.

Satyaki Raghunath, BIAL's COO, revealed that this initiative has been in the making for two to three years, noting the shift in focus from international to domestic cargo, especially in the post-COVID landscape. He emphasised the remarkable growth in cargo volumes, expecting to exceed 500,000 metric tons this year.

The new terminal incorporates cutting-edge technology, including real-time shipment tracking and data analytics tools, aiming to expedite operations and enhance communication throughout the supply chain.

The DCT also reinforces BLR Airport’s reputation as a primary hub for perishables, with specialised storage areas for items such as valuables, live animals, and hazardous materials. Furthermore, the terminal has been designed to meet Indian Green Building Council standards, showcasing eco-friendly features aimed at minimising environmental impact.  -PTI
