The integrity of
the Gruha Lakshmi scheme may be compromised if financially stable women
continue to receive its benefits, warned G Krishnappa, Chairman of the BBMP
Guarantee Schemes Implementation Committee (GSIC).
During a review
meeting at the Bommanahalli constituency office on Saturday, Krishnappa
underscored the importance of effectively carrying out the state’s guarantee
schemes to ensure that aid reaches those genuinely in need.
Gruha Lakshmi,
one of five guarantees introduced by the Congress-led government, provides a
monthly payment of Rs 2,000 to women heads of households who are married,
divorced, or destitute, and over 18 years of age.
Krishnappa
announced ongoing efforts to identify ineligible families, particularly those
who are income tax payers or government employees in possession of Below
Poverty Line (BPL) cards. Such cards will be upgraded to Above Poverty Line
(APL) status automatically.
He appealed to
financially secure women to voluntarily return the financial assistance,
ensuring that resources are allocated to those who truly require support.
"If every woman qualifies, regardless of her financial situation, many
from low-income groups will lose out on these vital benefits," he
cautioned.
Krishnappa also noted the international recognition received by Karnataka’s guarantee schemes and urged officials to address any issues swiftly, ensuring seamless assistance for beneficiaries.
