Bengaluru, 8 Oct

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Tuesday announced the operation of the "Secondary Solid Waste Transfer and Automated Waste Sorting Unit" in Koramangala. This innovative facility marks a big step forward in the City's solid waste management strategy.

The first unit, located in Ejeepura ward, has been operational since April 2024 and processes approximately 150 to 160 metric tonnes of solid waste daily. It serves three wards of the BTM Layout Division, three wards of the Shantinagar Division, and K-100 Valley.

The unit employs seven hook loader vehicles, each equipped with two capsule-type containers. Auto tippers collect waste from the wards and directly transfer it to these containers, where the waste is compressed and sludge (liquid waste) is separated. This efficient process allows each container to handle 16 to 18 tonnes of waste, reducing the need for more compactor vehicles.

The units will operate from 6am to 4pm, increasing the time-frame for waste disposal and improving collection from the wards. Raw and mixed waste are disposed of separately, with raw waste sent to the Chikkanagamangala Waste Treatment Plant.

The total construction cost of the secondary solid waste transfer unit is Rs 12 crore (excluding GST), with Rs 5.7 crore allocated for the automatic waste sorting unit. Key features of the automatic waste sorting unit include the capacity to sort 40 tonnes of waste daily, comprehensive tracking of waste collection through CCTV cameras, and advanced technology to prevent sludge leakage.

The first unit has already received 20,757.52 tonnes of waste since its launch. There are plans to establish similar units in every assembly constituency across the city, with a unit in Binnipet and Chamarajpet Assembly Constituency ready for inauguration and additional units awaiting government approval. –Salar News
