Bengaluru, 21 Sept

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) launched a pilot programme on Saturday to implant microchips in stray dogs. The initiative, spearheaded by Special Commissioner of Health and Animal Husbandry Suralkar Vikas Kishore, is being implemented in the Mathikere and Malleswaram areas of the City's western zone. The initiative aims to track and manage the street dog population using advanced technology.

Microchips, roughly the size of a grain of rice, are being inserted under the dogs' skin to serve as a permanent identification method. “This technology will store crucial information such as the dog's place of staying, vaccination history, and neutering status. By eliminating the need for temporary colour codes, which can fade quickly, microchips offer a more reliable and efficient way to track and manage stray dogs,” stated Kishore.

BBMP plans to complement the microchipping program with an integrated vaccination initiative. This will help prevent repeated vaccinations and streamline the overall management of stray dogs across the City. The corporation is collaborating with BIZ ORBIT, a local organisation, to implement the microchipping technology.

If the pilot programme is successful, BBMP intends to expand the microchipping initiative to all areas under its jurisdiction. -Salar News
