Bengaluru, 30 June

Bengaluru has seen a rise of 5.31 per cent in road accidents in the first six months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. At least 2,040 accidents were reported this year compared to 1937 in 2023. The data, released by the Bengaluru traffic police, also reveals there were 368 fatal accidents in the first half of 2024, resulting in 376 deaths. At least 1,672 accidents were non-fatal and 1,736 people were injured. It says February had the highest number of accidents, while April saw the fewest.

The report suggests that the increase in accidents is likely due to a combination of factors, including rising traffic volume and negligent driving. The Hennur traffic police said jumping traffic signals, rash driving, and wheeling are the cause of accidents. Uneven roads are also a contributing factor. To address these concerns, the traffic police department has taken several initiatives. They recently trained 1.5 lakh students on road safety rules and conducted week-long sessions with lectures and demonstrations. Additionally, AI cameras have been installed in 50 high-traffic areas across the City to enforce traffic regulations and penalise violators. Increased police presence during peak hours is another measure being implemented to manage traffic congestion and prevent accidents. Salar News
