Tasker Town in Shivajinagar is infested with rats due to the accumulation of garbage and the residents are bearing the brunt of it.

Residents of the quaint residential area say that on any given day, they can find about 10 rats scouring areas where garbage is accumulated. Pedestrians find it difficult to navigate the footpaths as rats lurch around them.

“This is a serious health hazard and BBMP should step in to eradicate this menace. Though we have complained to the civic authorities many times, our pleas have fallen on deaf ears,’’ S Manjunath, a resident of Chinnaswamy Mudaliar Road, told Salar News.

The residents of the area have given multiple complaints to BBMP. Civic workers came down and cleaned the area, but still, the menace has not been solved, he said.

Abdul Hafiz, a resident in the area, said, “I have asked in the BBMP WhatsApp group for the action to be taken to solve the menace but no response was given. Fed up with their apathy, I used my money to build concrete walls at the entrance of our area to keep the rats away and also to stop the people from throwing garbage.”

Abilash MM, BBMP Assistant Executive Engineer of Shivajinagar zone, told Salar News that he was unaware of the problem. He urged the residents to send him the locations of rats-infested areas with photographs. “I will send people to clean up the area.”

Khaleel Rahman, a resident of the area, said, “The rats are a menace; they bite the wires in the vehicles and snap them. When it is monsoon, the water accumulates in these areas leading to the breeding of mosquitoes.”

The rats enter the houses and eat up their ration and sometimes their clothes as well, according to another resident of the area. -Salar News
