BENGALURU, 20 MARCH
The Bengaluru Water Supply and
Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is undertaking a significant initiative to address the
water crisis in the City by filling 14 dried-up lakes with treated water.
This project aims to enhance the
groundwater level and alleviate the drinking water shortage in the City. The 14
lakes currently being filled with treated water by BWSSB include Vengaian Lake,
Yelemallappa Chetti Kere Lake, Halasuru Lake, Sarakki Lake, Agram Lake,
Hulimavu Lake, Chikkabegur Lake, Madivala Lake, Jakkur Lake, Allasandra Lake,
Kalkere Lake, Chikkabanavara Lake, Nayandahalli Lake, and Madavara Lake.
These lakes will have a combined
capacity of 316 MLD (Million Liters per Day) of treated water. In addition to
this initiative, BWSSB has also called for Expression of Interest from
corporates to undertake projects using innovative technologies aimed at improving
the water situation in Bengaluru. These projects will focus on various aspects
such as the development of bio-retention systems, preservation of rainwater,
natural filtration in Storm Water Drains, and integration of green
infrastructure with water and sewage treatment plants.
This decision comes after the Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on 18 March instructed officials to prioritise the refilling of major lakes, including KC Valley, to increase the groundwater level.
