Beijing, 9 April
China on 9 April
retaliated to US President Donald Trump's tariffs on Chinese exports by
slapping an 84 per cent duty on goods imported from the US, further escalating
the trade war between the world's two top economies.
The tariff hike,
which is more than 34 per cent, came hours after Trump imposed explosive new
tariffs on 60 countries, including a 104 per cent duty on China.
Trump's threat to
impose an additional 50 per cent tariff on China came after Beijing refused to
roll back the 34 per cent tariffs on US goods it announced last week to
retaliate to the 34 per cent tariffs imposed by Trump on Chinese goods.
China is going to
raise additional tariffs on products imported from the US to 84 per cent from
Thursday. According to the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council, US
reciprocal tariffs "moves in the wrong direction and seriously infringes
upon China's legitimate rights and interests."
For China, the US is the third-largest export market. Larry Hu, chief China economist at investment bank Macquarie, estimated that Trump's latest tariffs could reduce China's exports by 15 percentage points and its GDP growth by 2-2.5 percentage points.
