An undersea earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude struck northern Indonesia, causing buildings to collapse, killing at least one person, and triggering a small tsunami.

Waves up to 75 cm (30 inches) were recorded shortly after in several monitoring stations. Indonesia’s meteorological agency lifted its tsunami warning hours later, and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology confirmed no destructive threat to the country.

Strong shaking lasting 10 to 20 seconds was felt in Bitung and Ternate, with initial damage assessments noting damage to a church and houses in Ternate.

A 70-year-old woman died in a building collapse in Manado, and three people were hospitalised.

Nearly 50 aftershocks were felt in nearby areas, with residents describing the quake as very strong.
